Research 2 : Black Eyed Peas - 'Where is the Love?'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc

Genre : R&B
Style : Performance and concept based

Close ups of the main artists looking into the camera are particularly important in promotional music videos. These shots help fans fulfill their need to see the artists up close. Due to this entire video being mainly performance based, close ups and medium close ups are used regularly, these adhere to Goodwins theory of close ups establish an artist. These specific close up shot types were used because fans could not always get to the artists live performances, so being up close interacts with the audience more.
Close up shots also help the audience see emotion in the artists face as you are able to see their facial expression. As the song is about asking "where is the love" because there is so much hatred in the world, close ups and emotional shot types help get the artists points and emotion across to the audience.

Thoughout this video a range of shots and cuts are used, some performance based and some concept based. For example, throughout the video, there are jump cuts that are on each beat of the song. There are some actions, handheld and steady cam.

Lyrics and Visuals match

1.) The lyrics 'Where is the love?' is sung when a visual of a question mark is shown.

2.) The lyrics 'Will you practice what you preach' are synced with a man holding the bible to show what he believes in. The man is stood in the middle of a street with people surrounding him.

3.) 'KKK' is referred to as well as other racist groups, this was show through the text 'We are not a minority' on a wall behind the artist.

5.) The visuals link with the lyrics when 'feeling under' is sung. This shot shows the artist sat on stairs outside a building speaking to police. Proxemics are also represented by the police man standing up which can suggest that he has authority over the man. Stauss's binary opposition theory is objectified as the man is wearing black which connotes to evil, however this music video is trying to promote unity.

Concept

A range of shots were used, showing people running through a city putting posters up with question marks. This links into the lyrics as it says "where is the love".

Performance

Throughout the music video there are a range of different shots of the artists singing into camera. in this screen grab a medium long shot is used capturing the whole band singing into camera "one love".

Intertextuality

The question mark appears in crop circles, this could represent the meaning of something else out there. A long shot is used to enable to watcher to see the large question mark in the field.

How This Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

1] The videos concepts are shown very well throughout. I love how they had people sticking questionmarks around the city.
2] The costumes in the video look very modern for the time the video was released. I now know that in POP music videos you can just use modern costumes and outfits.
3] The close up shots in this video really work with godwins theory. many people now associate WillIam's voice with his face due to the close ups in alot of Black Eye Peas videos.

Research 1 : Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth - "See You Again"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgKAFK5djSk

The establishing shot for this video is a long shot of a beach, this shot sets them initial scene for the music video.

The piano and rap develops the music into a mix of classical and pop genre. The main costumes worn by the artists relate to the colour scheme, creating synergy for the music video.

The video is both performance based and narrative based.

This specific shot, is performance based as he is singing into the camera. A closeup shot is used to show eye contact with the camera, and show his facial gestures and emotion of the song.

For each time the chorus replays, a close up to a medium shot is used showing him singing into the camera.

As the song is linked to fast and furious, in the background, short montages are played. "how can we not talk about family when familys all that we got" is said as a clip of the fast and furious cast are walking up the beach, this shows a relationship between the lyrics and music video.

PERFORMANCE BASED

A medium close up shot is used when the shot is performance based. This is done to show the artist singing into the camera, this follows Goodwins theory of close ups establish the artist, therefore this connects the artist with the audience.

CONCEPT BASED

Throughout this video small concept based shots are played. Goodwins theory of intertextual reference is adhered here as this song features the actors and a clip from Fast and Furious 7. Furthermore, this song was wrote for the movie due to one of the actors deaths. These concept based shots help create a film like effect to the music video.

Genre Characteristics - This music video is very male genre orientated. This is shown through the many shots of muscle cars and action scenes. As well as this there are many shots of women dressed in bikinis, linking to Mulveys theory of  'male gaze'.
However, due to smartly dressed, rich looking men, the shot could link to greens theory of  'female gaze'.

How This Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

1] The close up performance based shots really emphasise the emotional concept and hiden meaning throughout the video.
2] There are many gendre characteistics in this video - for example the women are dressed in minimal clothing and the men in suits and regular clothing. In turn, fitting with laura mulveys theory of 'male gaze' as they are dressed to appear attractive to the opposite sex.
3] Cars in the background of some of the performance shots help the video link with the 'Fast and Furious' Concept.
4] I love the cinary and backgrounds of the shots in this music video.

Research: Olly Murs - Back Around

One of the songs we have chosen to look at for our music is Back Around by Olly Murs. This song does not have a music video to it which would make it appropriate for our music video.

I can feel the memory in my brain
I can feel the cold running through my veins
Like it's been, been this way, all of our life
Looking in the mirror through your eyes
Nothing makes sense, these tears won't dry
I let you down, down and out, never thought twice

But that was then
And this is now
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, in this town
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Bring love back around
Love back around

Funny how you never quite realise
That you already have paradise
Til it's gone, all the way, out of your life
Looking in the mirror, don't know myself
Nothing makes sense, this feels like hell
I let you down, down and out, never thought twice

But that was then (that was then)
And this is now (this is now)
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, (it feels dead) in this town (in this down)
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Love back around
Bring love, oh love, oh love
Bring love back around, yeah
Back around, (bring love), oh oh
Oh, love love love
Bring love back around, yeah

Who can I touch? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I trust? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I love? (there ain't nobody)
If it ain't you, you, you
Who can I touch? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I trust? (there ain't nobody)
Who can I love? (there ain't nobody)
If it ain't you, you, you

But that was then (was then)
And this is now (this is now)
I know I said I never, but I know I let you down
And it feels dead, (it feels dead) in this town (in this town)
So tell me when will you bring love back around
Back around
Bring love, your love, your love
Bring love back around, yeah
Back around, (bring love), oh oh
Oh, love love love
Bring love back around, yeah
Your love back around

Our Group has to thoroughly look through the lyrics to make sure that there are enough shots we can take to coincide with the lyrics. we also will have to apply for copyright from the OCR exam board.

Research: Brand Identity, Synergy and Cross Media Convergence

Futuristic

(brand identity, Synergy and Cross Media Convergence)

Futuristic developed synergy in his 2016 album and tours. By using the same font and colour scheme throughout the albums release, it created brand identity.

The front of the album and in many posters had a fuzzy, Static effect behind him. This links the name of the album "As Seen On The Internet" as it is meant to create a "technical difficulty" style. As well as this, he also has a mouse icon over his face and the albums name.

Having a specific theme/effect behind the artist pushed the existing brand identity further as people associated the effect to his album and tour posters.

Cross media convergence was also used as he also took to social media websites such as; Instagram, snap chat and Facebook to advertise his album to a wider audience and try to spread word of mouth for it. His fans were the first to find out about the album as they could see when he had posted on social media because they followed him.

On iTunes and Spotify, artists can upload music and choose specific images for the background. Futuristic used his album cover on ever song.

Merchandise was also a very good and effective way to advertise the album, The clothing design is modern and stands out from a crowed as it has "WTF" on it. This design aspect develops the clear genre of the music and brand identity for him. The clothing brand and hats also developed his synergy as they used black, white and red colours (the colours of the original "welcome to the internet" cover).
